Raynomalies

Because I've never had a dog before, I can't be sure if the following things are typical of dogs or not. But I've talked to a lot of people with dogs and have come to believe that some of Ray's characteristics are somewhat different than most dogs. So I've laid out the things that I've come to think of as slightly odd in a dog (based on information gleaned from speaking to other owners) and would be interested in feedback. Odd? Or not?

My dog has a delicate stomach. And he seems to enjoy baths, although he likes to be bathed in the sink at the daycare not out in the driveway (it's a modesty thing). He doesn't like fruit or vegetables of any kind. He will not eat most dog treats, only the really expensive ones or, on occasion, something offered by a stranger, although I can tell by the look on his face that he is just eating it to be polite. He will stand still to be dressed in any silly thing that I make for him. He enjoys yarn and, like a cat, wants to be right in the middle of any project on which I'm working. He likes a cup of coffee in the morning if he can steal one. He rarely (almost never) is excited to see his owners but is over the moon to meet anyone else. He likes to lie in the sun on a sweltering day. He loves to roll in a dryer sheet. He howls for football games (Home games on a Friday night, when the home team is winning, are quite noisy around here). He is not afraid to go to the vet. And, he has learned, after THREE years, to love a cat.

  1. I had a dog that enjoyed sunning herself in the blistering heat of an August summer. They are all individuals - some of them more unique than others. Ray is definitely unique. If you called him a Weirdo - that'd be pretty accurate. ;) But if our dogs weren't weird, we would have such interesting stories to tell!

    2. Uh, maybe we could agree on "quirky?"

    3. I had a foster dog I called my "Curly-tailed Weirdo" because she a) loved drinking the water out of the kiddie pool right AFTER I poured in some vinegar in (keeps the algae at bay) and b) she hid pine cones all over the house. I loved her dearly, but yes she had her quirks or weirdness! :)

    4. Perhaps its an interpretation thing - 'weird' this side of the big pond (i.e. in UK or @ least to me who lives there anyway) implies odd behaviour with a creepy tone. No offence intended .Blueberry's human. & all

Now quirky I do like :)

  2. Zoe can and will eat anything except lettuce (she will eat it mixed in w/other stuff, roll it around in her mouth then ceremoniously spit it out giving me serious stink eye). She runs to the bath tub if I say "bath?". She loves to lay in the blazing Florida August sun and bake (and she is a black dog). Zoe ignores the cats even tho the new kitten loves to pounce on her. She like Ray, LOVES all visitors, even if they are not really there to see her. But she is terrified of going to the vet (spent way too much time there as a puppy)
Zoe,like Ray is an individual. Celebrate their uniqueness-es!!

  3. Funny that Anne should mention lettuce. My crew LOVES lettuce, pineapple, apples, bananas and carrots. Since two of them are overweight, they've also learned to appreciate green beans. I think "basking in the sunshine" is a hound trait. It's a favorite of all three of my hounds. Elvis is fond of yarn (all textiles, really) and the cat, too. I wouldn't call Ray weird, exactly. I think he's more like a limited edition collector's item!

  4. Ah Ray...you are an interesting hound! If it makes you feel any better, my Bill (very dark) loves the sun even on the hottest and most humid days, to the point that I worry sometimes and make him come inside. Hiker LOVES going to the vet (for the attention no doubt)and all of them have the need to be in the middle of whatever is going on. Crazy fun! Enjoy Ray for who he is and all his quirks! Give him a hug for us, will ya?

  5. Ray, you aren't quirky, you are just you!!! Jean, you have no worries, spend some time with Roxy.
she is a nervous Nelly. she will eat ANYTHING including sticks, acorns and cicadas. she also has to be in the middle of everything. She doesn't drink coffee but loves beer. She also likes yarn, hates cats(I think it's because most are bigger than she)The also lays in the sun. the only thing is she doesn't like the football games, even though our son (her big bro) played for that team!! Ray I listen for you every day and love ya!!!
